The launch of the new Air Pollution Centre of Excellence was announced at COP28 in Dubai by Mary Muthoni Muriuki, the Kenya Principal Secretary of State Department for Public Health, at the Ministry of Health. The Air Pollution Centre of Excellence is funded by the UK’s National Institute of Health Research and based at the CLEAN-Air(Africa) Global Health Research Unit in Nairobi.

Everyday cooking practices that rely on wood, charcoal and kerosene generate household air pollution, a critical global public health concern associated with a wide range of cardiovascular and respiratory diseases. The CLEAN-Air(Africa) Air Pollution Centre of Excellence, jointly managed by the Kenya Medical Research Institute (KEMRI) and the University of Liverpool, provides training to health professionals and students, and collects air pollution data to inform most-needed policies to tackle air pollution across the African continent. The Centre hosts a state-of-the-art laboratory for accurate air pollution monitoring, including Africa’s first robotic weighing system for gravimetric mass measurements of particulate matter (PM_2.5). Through data-driven action, the Air Pollution Centre of Excellence will contribute to the fight against air pollution, with an evidence-based approach.
