On February 3rd, 2025 Kenya Medical Research Institute (KEMRI), in collaboration with CLEAN-Air(Africa) and the University of Liverpool, launched a new the Health Journalism & Public Health Communication Course. This hybrid training targets journalists, communicators, and researchers to help them translate scientific information into clear, accurate, and impactful narratives to inform for the general public and beyond.
The first cohort brought together around fifteen participants from Sub-Saharan Africa (Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, Cameroon), with diverse backgrounds. They underwent an intensive four-week training, blending theory and practice through rich, diverse modules. Participants have since started their field projects, producing articles or documentaries on key health topics of their choice, with guidance from mentors from University of Liverpool faculty, award-winning journalists, and public health experts.
Effective public health communication plays a crucial role in shaping policies and driving action. Research findings, however, can often be complex and difficult to interpret. By equipping journalists, health communications officers, and researchers with the expertise needed to effectively communicate health science, this course empowers them to inform stakeholders in public health and influence decision-makers who have the power to implement change.
