Today we officially launched our RCT to address the barriers to exclusive clean cooking in Tanzania under the theme “Ondoa Moshi, Okoa Maisha” (Reduce Smoke, Save Lives)!
Each year in Tanzania 42,000 lives are lost from exposure to household air pollution from reliance on charcoal and wood for cooking. Lead by our President, Dr Samia Hassain, the country is committed to addressing this public health issue through a national strategy for scaling clean cooking launched in May 2024. @CLEAN-Air(Africa) and @University of Dar es Salaam are providing important evidence through research to address barriers to adoption and sustained, exclusive use of clean cooking fuels (such as gas and electricity).
Today we launched our Randomised Controlled Trial with partners @MGAS to explore how scalable technology can be used to address barriers to (i) the cost of adoption and ongoing use of clean cooking (Smart meter pay-as-you go LPG) and (ii) exclusive use with no continued use of polluting fuels (LPG pressure cooker).
This study will measure the time and cost savings from the clean cooking technologies (included how these are used in relation to gender equality and education) as well as positive impacts through reduced air pollution and better health.
The interactive workshop brought together academics, researchers, clinicians and policy makers giving diverse perspectives on the urgent need to achieve Sustainable Goal 7 “Universal Access to Clean Modern Energy” by 2030. Delegates including representatives from the Tanzanian Prime Minister’s office, Ministry of Energy, Ministry of Finance, LPG Society of Tanzania, MGAS, TAIFA Gas, TASAF, MECS, researchers from University of Dar es Salaam School of Economics, household representatives from the community and Centre for Behavioural Studies research team. The workshop was opened with a presentation by our @CLEAN-Air(Africa) Director for the @University of Liverpool, @Professor Daniel Pope. Our collective goal is clear, to generate evidence that will drive inclusive, impactful, and sustainable and scalable solutions to clean cooking.
We are looking forward to presenting results from the research to the same committee to inform implementation of the National Strategy on Clean Cooking. We thank every stakeholder present today! Together, we are taking real steps to reduce indoor air pollution, improve health outcomes, and build a cleaner, safer future for Tanzanian households.
✨ Clean cooking is not a luxury — it’s a right.
Looking forward to the fieldwork ahead! Let’s keep moving forward. #OndoaMoshiOkoaMaisha #CleanCooking #RCTLaunch #RoleOfPressureCookers #PublicHealth #ResearchToPolicy
