An official ceremony celebrating the Centre’s achievement of ISO certification for the measurement and analysis of PM2.5 in air pollution —the benchmark pollutant for health, has taken place in Kenya.

This milestone recognises the Centre’s commitment to world-class quality, precision and reliability in air pollution monitoring and health research. It also reflects the outstanding work of the teams at Kenya Medical Research Institute (KEMRI), the University of Liverpool, and our partners across Kenya and internationally. The Centre is home to Africa’s first gravimetric filter processing robot, supporting the gold-standard handling and analysis of PM2.5 samples. Funded through the UK NIHR (National Institute for Health and Care Research), the Centre is a flagship facility of the CLEAN-Air(Africa) Global Health Research Unit, co-directed by the University of Liverpool and KEMRI. As the Centre continues to grow as an international leader in air pollution, health and climate research, we are excited about the next phase: expanding our work to include calibration and certification of low-cost air pollution monitoring technologies, and supporting results-based finance for clean energy transitions.

This achievement is an important step towards stronger air quality evidence, healthier communities, and cleaner energy futures across Africa and beyond.
