Last week CLEAN-Air(Africa) was delighted to showcase key findings from its research on clean energy, air pollution, health and climate at the ISEE2026 conference in Munich.
Public health research evidence was presented from across the CLEAN-Air(Africa) partnership including Kenya, Rwanda, Uganda, Tanzania and Cameroon with representation from key partners including Hôpital Général de Douala, Moi University, Rwanda Biomedical Centre and University of Liverpool.
▶️ Key findings:
👉 Esong Miranda Baame (Hopital General de Douala) shared results from Cameroon investigating the issue of Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease from household air pollution and health impacts through reduced emissions from clean cooking with LPG.
👉 Tabitha Chepkemoi (Moi University) presented Kenyan results from our clinical and community research on the hidden burden of burns from reliance on solid fuels and kerosene for household energy in Kenya, Uganda and Cameroon.
👉Mutariyani Bernard (Rwanda Biomedical Centre) highlighted shared results from our randomised controlled trial in Kigali, Rwanda that demonstrated the benefits of fuel efficient cooking (pressure cookers) in reducing stacking with pollution fuels.
👉Matthew Shupler, PhD, MPH (Liverpool University) presented key results from a study of Heart Rate Variability and exposure to smoke from cooking in Cameroon, providing plausible evidence for how household air pollution can lead to future cardiovascular disease.
👉Sepeedeh Saleh (Liverpool University) presented on behalf of Kenya Medical Research Institute (KEMRI) colleagues Patricia Ndambuki and Willah Nabukwangwa who were unfortunately not able to secure visas for travel. This included results from our schools research in Kenya and Rwanda. We are currently looking at impacts from clean cooking on air quality, cook’s health and child health and cognitive performance
